An Evidence-Based Healing & Wellness Center

History of the Bein House from 1889

Located in the Quapaw Quarter district of Little Rock, named in honor of the Quapaw Indians who lived in the area centuries ago, it is conveniently located in downtown Little Rock, close to the MacArthur Historic Park, Pettaway, Soma, and the Governor’s Mansion Historic District.

The Cumberland Crest House was initially built circa 1889 by Ms. Lizzy G. Bein and is an excellent example of the ornate Victorian Queen Anne-style cottage, designed by local architects Max Orlopp and Casper Kusener. This house replaced an earlier home built by Mr. and Mrs. Bein in ca. 1880, which was lost to fire in 1888, shortly after the death of Mr. Hugh Bein. Lizzy Bein rebuilt this house on a portion of their original lot. She soon sold the home, and it was eventually purchased by the David Michael family, who lived here for over forty years. By the 1980s, the house had been divided into five apartments and was suffering from neglect and recent fire damage. In 1982, the architectural firm of Witsell, Evans, and Rasco purchased the residence and restored the exterior, renovating the interior to serve as their new office. The firm retained many interior features, such as the large doorways and woodwork, and reworked the space to suit their office needs. A second floor was added in the original attic space.

Cumberland Crest House of Today

We named the home Cumberland Crest House after discovering the rich history behind the name “Cumberland.” Once a historic county in northwest England, Cumberland had its coat of arms, which featured the Parnassus flower. This delicate bloom, native to marshy ground, came to symbolize for us the beauty that can arise from life’s most difficult and muddy experiences—a fitting metaphor for the journey of self-discovery. You’ll find quiet nods to this symbolism woven throughout the property.

Tracy Rivers of Angelfish Decorative thoughtfully designed the interior. Inspired by a visit to Paris, Tracy brought warmth, elegance, and a sense of timeless comfort to every room. Her design touch makes each visitor feel immediately welcomed.

Shortly after we purchased the property, a Little Rock arborist informed us that the majestic 200-year-old oak tree in the front garden had to be removed. To preserve its spirit and honor its legacy, we used its wood to create signage throughout the house, from the entrances to the garden. Knowing its story brings smiles to those who visit.

The grounds of Cumberland Crest House are a garden masterpiece, designed and maintained by Jose Martinez. With a vibrant array of flowers that bloom year-round, peaceful seating areas, and a fire pit we light for gatherings, the gardens offer a serene space to relax and reconnect.
