An Evidence-Based Healing & Wellness Center
Cumberland Crest House in Little Rock houses several advanced healing and wellness therapies. From the exceptional Energy Enhancement System suite, to professional family counseling and occupational therapy, it exists to help people of all ages.
The house itself has its own story to tell. Located in the Quapaw Quarter district of Little Rock, named in honor of the Quapaw Indians who lived in the area centuries ago, Cumberland Crest House was originally designed and built in the Victorian Queen Anne style by architects Max Orlopp and Casper Kusener around 1889.
This house replaced an early home built by Mr. and Mrs. Bein in ca. 1880, which was lost to fire in 1888, shortly after the death of Mr. Hugh Bein. In 1889 Mrs. Lizzy Bein rebuilt this house on a portion of their original lot. She soon sold the home and it was eventually purchased by the David Michael family who lived here for over forty years. By the 1980s, the house had been divided into five apartments and was suffering from neglect and recent fire damage. In 1982, the architectural firm of Witsell, Evans and Rasco purchased the residence and restored the exterior and renovated the interior to serve as their new office. The firm kept many interior features such as the large doorways and woodwork intact, and reworked the space to function for their office needs. A second floor was added in the original attic space.
Historically known as the Lizzy Bein house, it is conveniently located in downtown Little Rock, close to the MacArthur Historic Park, Pettaway, Soma, and the Governor’s Mansion Historic District.
We began calling the home Cumberland Crest House when we discovered the history of the name “Cumberland”. As an historic county in northwest England, it had its own coat of arms, with the Parnassus flower as part of its crest. Because it’s a flower born out of the marsh, it represented to us the beauty born out of the muddy experiences we all go through in the journey to discover our true selves. When you visit Cumberland Crest House, you will see the Parnassus flower displayed throughout the property.
Sadly, right after we bought the property, the Little Rock arborist said we needed to take down the 200-year-old oak tree in the front garden. In order to keep the spirit of the oak tree, we used its wood to create the signage throughout the building, entrances, and the front garden. The landscape garden design is by Jose Martinez. He is a masterful gardener creating works of art throughout Little Rock.
The interior of the house was designed by Tracy Rivers of Angel Fish Decorative. She had spent time in Paris and fell in love with purple lighting and a water feature that she re-created in our lobby area. Her artwork can also be seen throughout the house which adds to its calm tranquil tone.
We truly hope you enjoy your time here with us in this magical place.
